On August 13th, UNESCO published an article mentioning that "at least 800 buildings, many of which are located in the old neighborhoods of Gemayzeh and Mar Mikhael," were damaged due to the Beirut port explosion on August 4th (60 buildings are at risk of collapse). In an exclusive interview with "Dialectic Foundation," Beirut heritage researcher and president of the "Our Heritage Beirut" Association, Suhail Mneimneh, clarified that "most of the damaged buildings in the Gemayzeh area were constructed between 1930 and 1940" and added that there are "buildings designed in the Ottoman style from the second half of the 19th century, specifically between 1860-1890." Regarding the buildings constructed in the 1950s, Mneimneh explained that they were designed in the Art Deco style and feature unique architectural elements.
"Dialectic Foundation" is publishing a list of 33 houses and historical landmarks that were damaged by the explosion.
In the neighborhoods of Nuwairi and Bourj Abu Haidar, no damage was reported for the heritage buildings, according to the heads of the two areas, Walid Aytani (Nuwairi) and Mahmoud Al-Nakhal (Bourj Abu Haidar).
